Most Christian denominations teach the lie that, once you die, you have an immortal, ghost-like "spirit" or "soul" that leaves your body and either goes to Heaven, Hell, or some other "waiting place" until the 2nd coming of Christ. At that time, they say, Jesus will raise your body from the grave, and you will either live in Heaven forever with Jesus, or else you're going to burn eternally in the fires of Hell alongside Satan and his demons (of course, no one beleives they'll go to Hell, so the belief is that once you die, you'll immediately be transported to a better place). This lie is somewhat comforting because it teaches us that death is just a transition into something better - that the instant our Earthly life is extinguished, another, eternal life will begin, and this lie has caused a countless many to end their physical lives out of despair, believing that if they can just escape their Earthly body, they'll instanly be in a spiritual paradise.
The Truth, however, is that they couldn't be more wrong. A careful study of the Scriptures will reveal to you that, in fact, death is a sleep! You are not conscious in death. You have no thought or emotion, and aside from your decomposing corpse, you are as though you've never been. You have no immortal "soul" that will "go to the light" upon death and "cross over" into the afterlife. You will not "haunt," visit, or "watch over" the living, because you will not exist, whether in Heaven, Hell, Purgatory, here on Earth, or any other plane of existence. Death, truly, is the end of all things, and there is no hope for life beyond the grave except in Jesus Christ. Even so, you will remain in your grave in an unconscious state of sleep, unaware of the passing of time and events, and you will awake only when you hear Jesus wake you from your slumber upon his 2nd coming. Until then, the grave has claimed you, but Jesus will redeem you!
