Death is perhaps one of the most universally misunderstood topics in the Bible. Most Christian denominations teach that death is merely a transition point between two worlds, and that upon your death, you'll will still live on in one form or another. This gross misconception about death has led to the widespread belief that the dead are still alive in "spirit" form, and that they either "go to the light" to be with God, they're dragged down to Hell by demons, or they're "trapped" here on Earth where they haunt the living. These lies are so deeply entrenched in Christianity that very few know the real truth about death.
When God created man, He originally intended for man to live forever right here on Earth in our physical bodies, but when man chose to rebel against God, God imposed a death sentence on all men. God was fully justified in doing this because He is the giver of life, and should the lives that He created rebel against Him, it is His right to take that life away. From that point forward, all men would die (because God's Spirit was withdrawn from the hearts of men, and therefore, all would sin).
Just as you did not exist before you were given life, so you will not exist upon your death. Death is the end of all things. You will not exist beyond the grave. You don't have an immortal soul that will be immediately transported to Heaven, Hell, or some "waiting place" where you will reside until the judgment. You will not remain on Earth to haunt your relatives. You're simply sleeping in the dust, unconscious and unaware of the passage of time or events. You will have no thought or emotion, and there is no hope for life beyond the grave except through faith in Jesus Christ. You will not awake from your slumber until Jesus calls you from your grave, either during the resurrection of the righteous upon Jesus's return to Earth or the resurrection of the wicked 1,000 years later, in which case you will face your judgment and be eternally destroyed forever and blotted out of existence (this is what the Bible calls "the second death"). Yes, there will be two resurrections, and you want no part in the resurrection of the wicked! You want to be among the number that Christ will awake from their sleep when He returns to take His people to Heaven.
